Mast Cell

Acute Food Allergy Screen (IgE)

This form of acute (classical) allergy usually involves the production of a special class of antibodies called IgE (immunoglobulin E). These antibodies are bound to specific cells called mast cells, which are found in the skin, lungs, digestive tract and in many other tissues. The mast cells contain many powerful chemicals including histamine, that when released in the skin for example, causes an itchy red rash.  If a specific antigen binds to the free end of IgE antibody, this causes the mast cell to explode, releasing its chemical mediators and an allergic reaction takes place. Other reactions can include swelling and 'tingling', or more seriously a restriction in the airways. In other people such an allergic reaction can result in a variety of symptoms not just restricted to the digestive tract. This type of allergy, is often genetic, and if either parent is allergic, there is a 40-80% increase in the likelihood that their children will also suffer from allergies.

How does the test work?

The identification of the specific IgE antibodies to these allergens is achieved through a blood test, often referred to as the RAST test. This procedure is convenient  because it does not involve the risk of adverse allergic reactions. Accurate identification of this type of allergy is vital, as treatment strategies are very different from those of food intolerances.
